Franschhoek is the prettiest of the Winelands towns and, for riders, the one with the widest spread of terrain: graded estate trails on the valley floor, vineyard singletrack on the slopes, and a mountain pass that opens onto a high plateau for long, exposed days.

It's also where the Winelands Multi-Day trip arrives after the big traverse from Stellenbosch, which is why most groups spend at least two nights here. The food is a genuine reason to stay longer.

Cape Line Co. doesn't run tours in Franschhoek. We plan the trip and book it with a local partner operator who holds the estate and mountain permits and runs the guiding, shuttles, bikes and lodges on the ground.

The networks

Where you'll ride.

Beginner to intermediate+
Boschendal estate trails

A purpose-built network across one of the oldest wine estates in the country, at the Franschhoek end of the Banhoek valley. Graded loops from easy farm track to flowing singletrack through orchards and fynbos, with a restaurant at the trailhead.

Intermediate
Franschhoek valley singletrack

Trails on the farms and lower slopes around the village β€” fast vineyard singletrack, short technical climbs and a sustained descent that features on the Winelands Multi-Day example trip.

Intermediate to advanced
Franschhoek Pass and the mountains

The pass road climbs out of the valley to a high plateau with gravel and jeep track towards the Theewaterskloof side. Long, exposed, big-view days for strong groups who want distance and elevation.

Practical

What to know.

Permits and access

Estate networks and the mountain areas require permits, arranged by your partner operator as part of the trip. Guided riding keeps groups on routes where access is agreed with the landowners.

Season and weather

Franschhoek sits at the head of a valley surrounded by high mountains, so it's slightly cooler and greener than Paarl, with occasional summer cloud on the pass. October to April is the window.

Food and lodging

The village is the culinary centre of the Winelands, which is why many multi-day trips schedule a rest day here. Operators use a mix of guesthouses and estate accommodation; your proposal lists the exact lodges.

Linking to Stellenbosch

The Banhoek valley links Franschhoek to Stellenbosch by trail, which is the backbone of the Winelands Multi-Day trip. Groups that want more than a day here usually ride point to point.

Common questions

Riding Franschhoek

Is Franschhoek good for a rest day?
It's the best rest-day town in the Western Cape. Most Winelands trips plan an easy optional spin on the Boschendal loops and a long lunch in the village.
How hard is the Franschhoek Pass day?
The pass itself is a long, steady climb on tar before the gravel plateau. It's a strong-intermediate day by distance and elevation rather than technical difficulty. We'll tell you honestly whether it suits your group.
Can we ride from Franschhoek to Stellenbosch?
Yes. The Banhoek valley trails link the two, and that traverse is the core of the Winelands Multi-Day trip delivered by our partner operators.
Can we ride e-bikes?
The estate networks generally welcome e-bikes; the mountain and pass routes vary. Tell us and we'll confirm with the operator and plan the days around it.
